I got my Top Water PDL last week and fished it for about 4 hours and loved it. I had a predator pdl so thats what I'm comparing with. First impression was it's more stable than the predator, I could leave too far in the predator and get water over the side. In the top water I can stand on one side comfortably. It's very sensitive to rudder input and tracks really well. The predator hull is more efficient and faster (I think) but the size and weight of the top water is more important to me than a few tenths mph. I'm old and skinny so the size and weight makes it much is easier for me to handle. The predator may be better for bigger water, longer distances.
I have spent about 20 hours on it fishing Texas bays. Compared to the predator pdl it is about one mph slower. The ride is a little wet when you get in some choppy conditions, spray comes over the bow. It seems heavier than the 77 pounds stated in the specs, however the shorter length is easier to load, transport and manuever. It's very stable on the water. I am disappointed in the color, i ordered the boreal and it does not look like the picture of the website. The lighter green is darker so the kayak looks mostly a dark green color. Iwould say the draft is about 15 inches before the drive hits bottom, but you can just flip it up and use the paddle if it gets too shallow. The seat sits high, which gives you an advantage looking into the water, it is also comfortable. I am going to give it 3 stars due to the color issue other wise i would have given it 4 stars.
Awesome kayak shipping contact was good but infrequent updates if you are impatient(like me) and are looking to see exactly where your kayak is at but the team that handled the delivery were accurate and on time . Not to bash old town or ACK but I did not get scupper plugs or the knob for the trucker steering control. A quick email to ACK is fixing this issue. I look forward to many fantastic hours on my new kayak this spring and even with minor issues of not living in a perfect world ACK and Old Town have done a great job Thank you both
This is my first fishing kayak. The idea of buying one has been on my mind for a couple years, but finally pulled the trigger on the Topwater PDL because of the design and size. It is an excellent kayak. The design is great with the stuff you need and nothing you don't. Well thought out. The pedal drive is a game changer for fishing because you can hold your position well even in the wind. Standing up in it is no problem and the stability is great. There is a few things I would improve on but they are minor and won't get into that. I am 5'7" and I am about as small as you could be for this boat. I also installed the Boonedox Landing Gear w/ tall legs and that makes lugging this around much easier. Even though it is smaller it is still a beast. This is definitely one of the better designed pedal kayaks on the market.
