Hobie Kayaks introduces it's revolutionary new Hobie EVOLVE Series powered by Torqeedo's Ultralight 402 electric motor. For the first time in kayak history, you're one touch away from quiet, clean, and efficient electric propulsion. Go for hours at a steady two knots, or pour on the juice for a burst of speed. It's your call. This compact, German-engineered motor is custom designed with two different types of Hobie mounts to slip into your existing Hobie kayak. Quietly slip through the bass-choked shallows...Give your muscles a break during a lengthy bay cruise...Introduce a non-paddling friend to kayaking with power...The choice is yours. And with Hobie's new Hobie EVOLVE, you have more choices than ever. Two options available, one for the hard shell kayak series and one for the inflatable kayak series.

This motor worked well on my Hobie i12 Inflatable. I use it in place of the pedals. It went for several hours in the ocean at Santa Barbara and San Diego. I got the solar panel so I wouldn't have to run the generator so long at Catalina. The only drawback is, you can't go over the kelp with it in place, and have to remove it when beaching the kayak. It pulls out easy enough when that happens. Also, the solar panel needs to have a frame to keep it flat and pointed to the sun. Tying it over the kayak degrades the charge too much. I think something made out of tent poles should work. It's a little pricy but a lot of fun, and you can go farther than paddling. I'm glad I got mine.
I have 2 of these motors, and have used them for the past 2 years. I have had to have one repaired (at a cost of $500 +) when some fishing line got caught in the rear housing. I also have had to have them returned for various problems. Thery are wholly unreliable: you can be in the middle of a trip and turn it off, and then when you go to turn it on you get a E30 or some error code, that may take anywhere from 5 min. to 1 hour to repair. Or, more likely, you will not get the motor to work again. I just used mine last weekend and basically this occurred. I cannot say 'don't buy', but 'buyer beware'. It is a wonderful option, especially if you are tired, and want a day of quiet trolling...just be prepared..and don't count on it! (also, it is VERY expensive!)
Austin Kayak great place to shop, great costumer service!! This motor is great so far, fits well and low in PA 12, helps a lot when it's windy on the lake or ocean, the only thing i don't like is the 320W battery that comes with it, at 2.5 mph against the 10mph wind will not last more than 3-4 hours, for an all day fisherman not good. Ordered a 915 W battery from AK it works like a charm12 hours on water trolling wind no wind still has 40% charge left. Expensive battery but well worth it.
Awesome little motor
