There are times in life when you run across some really incredible folks doing some amazing work that in no way benefits themselves. For 8 years now Steven Schmidt and his group from NuStar have put on one of the best inshore tournaments anywhere. If there’s any doubt how amazing this tournament is just take a look at the 70 team turnout in the kayak division, but a quality tournament is not what drives this team of folks.
The tournament raised $100,000 for over 30 charities here in Texas. The main recipients were Haven for Hope National MS Society and Heroes on the Water. These organizations do so much in our community; helping find homes for people that have fallen on difficult times, battling a terrible disease and supporting those that have unfortunately been affected and helping our veterans face the challenges of dealing with the side-effects that come with defending our nation’s freedom.
I was lucky enough to represent ACK at the tournament this year and I’m proud of not only our company, but also our vendors Lit Coolers, Bending Branches, and Werner that also supported the tournament. I was invited to fish with a group of friends so finishing first wasn’t my goal, getting out on the water with some great folks that I don’t get to spend enough time with was a high priority for me. Every person I fished with, I’ve met through my time as the ACK San Antonio store manager and I couldn’t have imagined a better crew to hit the water with. Mike and Sandra from Fin Factory Charters, Fred, Linda, Jesus, Oscar and last but not least my partner Eugene Mora! Eugene and I put in the work on tournament day and ended up with a nice pair of reds at the weigh-in but for me this was another trip making memories with friends while supporting our community.
