I have one year experience with the Topwater 106 and 1 week with the Minn kota sportsman 106. The giant rudder on the sportsman keeps you on your desired track in heavy crosswinds. The Topwater required paddling on one side to keep from turning around. Both seats are comfortable and interchangeable. The Sportsman is much easier to stand up in. The high seat position is quite a bit higher. I can stand on the side of the Sportsman and it barely leans to the side. You are not going to tip it over without extreme effort. The Sportsman is about 15" tall and the Topwater is about 11" tall when measured a few feet back from the front. Scupper holes are very deep and water will not splash onto the deck. The extra 4" of height makes it much easier for me to stand and sit on the edge of my dock when boarding or getting off. The Sportsman 106 is definitely a much heavier kayak than the Topwater 106. Mine is rigged with a group 31 led battery that is 27 pounds. To lift it onto my dock I have a 3/4 inch tree rope tied to the front grab handle. Lifting the front of the kayak about one foot until I can hook the front edge of the transducer pocket on the dock is very easy for this 64 year old 130 pound athletic female. Next I put the rope down and use the grab handle and walk backwards pulling the kayak onto the dock. This is close to a maximum effort once the back end of the boat is no longer touching the water. More than half the boat need to be on the dock before the front end drops down. The Topwater is a breeze to get out of the water. I experimented with the motor and seat removed before lifting and I didn't notice any difference. It must be the battery and rudder weighing it down. The bottom of the Sportsman being wider and flatter than the Topwater also make it more difficult to slide it about on the dock. Launching it from the dock is easy. I lower it until the back hits the water and the front catches on the transducer pocket then it is an easy lift with a rope on the front grab handle to lower the nose. I chose the 106 minn kota over the spot lock for several reasons. I didn't want to have the motor head and cable spinning above the deck where it could catch on things. I wanted to keep my deck clear for gear or a place for a dog to sit. I can use the rudder and throttle to stay in position. With spot lock anchor the wind determines the direction you face. With the fixed position motor the battery life shoud be much better. I had the Ulterra on my pontoon boat for 4 years it was a good unit. This time I chose the 106 sportsman for the simplicity. It does its job and you see nothing. That is what I was looking for. No motor and cable constantly spinning around. Nothing to wind around a fishing pole or gear if I get distracted. Overall the Sportsman 106 like the Topwater 106 is a solid choice and perfect for a relaxing time on the water. I did have some issues with quality control on this very early production kayak. See the customer photos section for details. I will update soon as I have more experience with this kayak.
