Ordered a can when installing my new wood gunwales on my 1982
Mad River canoe. Worked great! I could see the water beading off
of the gunwales after the very first application. After 3 coats, the
gunwales are perforing great in the water. I plan to reapply twice a
year and will be ordering more. Details on my gunwale
replacement and the Harmony Gunwale Guard and Cane Seats

Thank you for the question! You would stain the gunwale, then apply the guard. As far as how many coats to apply, it really depends on how you apply it. If you apply it sparingly and meticulously, then probably 3-4 coats. If you apply it thick and liberally, then 1-2 coats should be fine. You can typically tell when the guard is starting to wear off, so you would just apply it when needed, which could be once a year, or a few times a year. Please let us know if you have any other questions!
