Relatively easy to install and seems to enhance stability and tracking some. Not a huge difference it seems though. Not sure if you need it unless you're doing huge amount of paddling.

Advanced Elements Backbone-- This item works very well-- it really helps keep the kayak completely flat on the water-- and paddles very well through the water. Would highly recommend the Advanced Elements products to anyone wanting an inflatable kayak--very convenient and easy to use--excellent for storing and transportation!!

I haven't really used my kayak without the backbone, but its a little hard to setup so that's why I gave it 4 stars. Seems to work well though.

I have found that the backbone does give you a little better ride and a little more speed but with me only weighing in at about 165 its hard to tell the difference
