I wanted the lightest and fastest Sit On Top kayak and asked the folks at ACK. The Necky Vector14 is the one they suggested. Took my first ride in it yesterday and it met all my expectations. I thought both initial and secondary stability was very good, it tracks well and is really not that hard to turn, especially if edged. Also the seat was surprisingly comfortable and that's before I have even figured out how to adjust the back rest. I would say this boat is perfect if it were 10 lbs lighter, but you have to sacrifice something. Life is full of compromises. The lake was glassy smooth with no wind and I stayed dry. I'm sure it will be a different experience when it gets windy and choppy.

I've had my necky vector 14 for about 2 years now and while in many ways it is a great boat, here are a few areas where it could be improved. The best parts I've found are that it is fast and tracks well for a sit on top, and the seat is suprisingly comfortable. The not so great part is what happens in rough or even slightly wavy conditions. Due to the lack of a wave deflector, any wave which breaks over the bow is coming straight into the cockpit, possibly swamping you. While the handles are ideally psitioned for lifting the kayak from it's center of gravity, they are also in a perfect position to bash your hands on while paddling in rough conditions. The third issue I have is the weight capacity. 400lbs is not the working capacity in my experience, but closer to the capacity the kayak sinks at. I'm around 210lbs and it paddles ok with just me, With a moderate gear bag and some drinking water added, the kayak sits too low in the water to paddle safely in anything but glass clear conditions. I bought this kayak with the intention of using it for some day and overnight trips, but unfortunately due to the limited loading and poor rough weather performance, that won't be happening. Overall still a good boat if you keep those things in mind.

I wanted something that would work like a touring boat, with the comfort and openness of an SOT. Enter the Vector. I have only rented boats in the past. This is my first kayak to own. Overall, it is very stable and tracks well. The wind can push it around a bit, but then that happens to virtually every boat. Storage space is great, and the seat is very comfy. I don't bring GPS when I go out, so the extra bungy in the cockpit works for holding a second waterbottle. Excellent. So far the hatches keep everything dry...the reviews you hear about them being the best appear to be true. Now, it is true that the scupper holes under the seat do make for a wet ride. But I am paddling in Arizona, so this is very welcome in 104 degree weather. Besides, you're in a kayak! If you want to stay dry, don't go on the water. Still, all in all, the scuppers work very well and the ride isnt terribly wet. Not ony would I recommend this to someone else, I hope that I'll be able to find another one like it when the time comes to replace it.

I tried out several SOT kayaks over the weekend: Tetra 12, Necky Vector 13, Necky Vector 14, and Tarpon 140. I used a GPS to determine speed using similar relative effort normal paddling and hard paddling, some turns. The Necky Vector 14 was the winner in terms of speed. It tracks straight as an arrow, and is clearly the tourer of the SOT kayaks of similar length. The seat was very comfortable, but low in the kayak to add stability, making for a comfortable but potentially wet ride. The Necky 14 was less stable than the other boats on this list, but not uncomfortably so. Still, its more of a tourer/paddler than a fishing or diving platform.

Delivery was much quicker that I expected and the boat had additional wrapping material around what the manufacturer had already used so it arrived in perfect condition. As for the boat its great, all the fun of a sit on top without that feeling that youre paddling a barrel through the water. Lots of storage so Ill be doing multi- night trips. Im a big guy, 6 4 275lbs and this boat floats me very well and handles better. Im still feeling out the stability but so far secondary feels good and maybe could be edged further with some knee braces, but Ill make that decision later. If you cant tell Im very happy with the boat.
