I used this for a five month kayaking marathon from the bottom of Puget
Sound through the San Juan and Gulf Islands to Nanaimo, BC. It was
rained on regularly, submerged in surf and kelp, baked in the sun,
written on with grease pencil, wiped with fine sand on it, and otherwise
abused in predictable ways. It passed all those tests with flying colors.
This is the best size (medium) to fit under the bungies on a kayak deck.
The little D-rings are sufficient to secure it there without additional clips.
Mine died in the great 2013 flood in Colorado when it filled with fine mud
after being submerged, open, in flood waters in my basement for four
days. I promptly bought another because I liked the first one so much.
This is a fine, reliable deck chart case. I use the smaller version to keep
my paperback book dry on long trips, and to hold folded charts that don't
go on the deck. I know people who use the large size for charts and just
fold it in half on the deck, but I think that's unwieldy. Both sides of the
medium case are the same, so you can fold a chart in half, and just flip
the case over to the other side when you pass over the fold in the map.
