ACK Review: When my best friend borrowed my Hobie Mirage Outback, I was a little concerned that he would return it to me with something damaged or broken on it. I figured this would happen because he is not a very careful person and has a bad reputation from ruining my stuff in the past. It is good that I was able to get the replacement Mirage Idler Pulley instead of having to replace my entire Mirage Drive. The pulley cost just over $5 and was very easy to install.

V2 Mirage Idler Pulley Replacement Tools and materials needed - idler pulley, six ¼-20 stainless locknuts, ¼ or 11mm open-end wrench, penetrant (PB Blaster), ¼" punch, hammer, 1/8" hex wrench 1) Spray penetrant on the set-screw and both sides of the stainless shaft in the Idler Pulley area 2) Use the 1/8" hex wrench to remove the set-screw 3) Use the ¼" punch to lightly tap out the stainless shaft. If it's solidly stuck in place due to longtime usage and grime, use the hammer to tap the punch. 4) Remove the old fuxated Idler Pulley (this part is crying out for an aftermarket machinist to mfgr a stainless steel or anodized billet aluminum or solid Delrin Idler Pulley) 5) Move the new Idler Pulley into place 6) Insert stainless shaft into place, making absolutely sure the flat detent on the shaft will align with the set-screw area! Otherwise, this will slip over time and come off mid-paddle. 7) Carefully screw the set-screw into place tightly , making sure not to overscrew it and strip the plastic threads. (optional: use Green threadlocker to ensure setscrew doesn't back out) 8) Back off the old ¼-20 stainless locknuts on the ends of the Idler Pulley cable. Replace with new, un-used ¼-20 stainless locknuts, making sure the cable is in the groove and in place on the rest of the drive. While you are at it, also backoff and replace the other ¼-20 stainless locknuts in this area, two locknuts on each side of the drive. 9) Use Breakfree CLP to lubricate all moving part areas. Do NOT use WD-40. I used to work for an industrial chemcical company and under spectrochemical analysis we found that WD-40 is comprised of only some aerosol propellant and menhaden fish oil. Over time, WD-40 will dry out and leave a sticky, gummy surface for dust, grime and other contaminants to gain hold.

The original 2008 idler cable was stretched beyond adjustment and needed replacement, so I also purchased and installed the idler pulley V2 while was at it. Wasn't sure it was the right pulley but an ACK employee assured me it would fit and he was correct - thank you. Both were very easy to install.

Idler pulley is great. However make sure your cable is in good shape. My had some nicks and tears in the casing and it tore the lip of the pulley off. Time for another one!
