Something Unexpected Occurred...
In my opinion I already have one of the best Kayaks on the market in a Hobie. When I go on a fishing trip with my buddies they always have trouble keeping up with me and my Hobie Mirage Drive. I can’t wait to see their faces when I show up with my new Hobie Evolve Torqeedo Motor Kit dropped into the drive well on my yak, or better yet at the end of a day of fishing when they are wearing out, and I'm towing them back in at the end of the evening and I still have energy at night to keep the party going. This is gonna be standard on kayaks soon :) The one drawback is that if your in a state that requires you to register anything with a motor you will have to.

This motor worked well on my Hobie i12 Inflatable. I use it in place
of the pedals. It went for several hours in the ocean at Santa
Barbara and San Diego. I got the solar panel so I wouldn't have to
run the generator so long at Catalina.
The only drawback is, you can't go over the kelp with it in place,
and have to remove it when beaching the kayak. It pulls out easy
enough when that happens. Also, the solar panel needs to have a
frame to keep it flat and pointed to the sun. Tying it over the kayak
degrades the charge too much. I think something made out of tent
poles should work.
It's a little pricy but a lot of fun, and you can go farther than
paddling. I'm glad I got mine.
I have 2 of these motors, and have used them for the past 2
years. I have had to have one repaired (at a cost of $500
+) when some fishing line got caught in the rear housing. I
also have had to have them returned for various problems.
Thery are wholly unreliable: you can be in the middle of a
trip and turn it off, and then when you go to turn it on you
get a E30 or some error code, that may take anywhere from
5 min. to 1 hour to repair. Or, more likely, you will not get
the motor to work again. I just used mine last weekend and
basically this occurred. I cannot say 'don't buy', but 'buyer
beware'. It is a wonderful option, especially if you are tired,
and want a day of quiet trolling...just be prepared..and don't
count on it! (also, it is VERY expensive!)
So far so good,Try it in both places.I seem to like
the rudder the best place.Well worth the money!!!.
My comments concerning the sword like propeller push blade are specific to when the motor is inserted and used within the Mirage Drive well. The need for vertical propeller orientation when removing is not a problem when the motor is mounted in the rudder position.
This motor really goes much faster on the water than I expected. My wife and I traveled about 5 MPH at full throttle in our Hobie Oasis. The only design flaw that I noted is the need to insert a metal "sword" into the top of the unit to push the propeller into alinement with the well slot of the motor. This is the only thing that will allow removal of the unit. It works but it's annoying when wanting quick removal of the motor while entering shallow water. You will also need this metal sword every time prior to taking your boat out of the water. The sword seems like an after thought device, unlike typical German engineering. At this price one should expect more than just a sword like push rod. It's also an easy thing to get lost as there is no place to store the blade while underway, and I doubt that it can float if it goes over board. It would be far better to have a fixed cam device for proper orientation of the propeller while at rest, or a sword that can be built as a part of the motor ready to slide into position for immediate use when needed. Presently you need to completely remove the sword when underway. Otherwise despite this minor thing I would say that this is well worth the purchase.
Works exactly as described. I had my local dealer
install this onto the rudder, so I am still able
to use my pedals at the same time. I am getting 6-
12 miles per charge, depending on the speed, ocean current and level of effort I put into pedaling. This gives me the confidence to go out farther and into stronger currents knowing that the combination of turbo pedals + Torqeedo will get me back safely. Just waiting for Hobie to offer additional batteries, so I can bump up my speeds without worrying about bringing down my range.
