This is a Very Nice Vest.
The High Back fits just above
the Seat on my WS Tarpon.
It adjusts well for a great Fit
and has a Buckle at the bottom
for a snug fit with no riding up.
Plenty of Pockets without
feeling bulky.
I did a lot of research on other
PFD's before I decided on the
Chinook. I am glad I got this
one.
I highly recommend it if you
are in the Market for a new

Good fit and comfortable to wear while
paddling. Im 6 ft 185 lbs and purchased the
L/XL. Bought this for kayak touring and
not for fishing though I may use it for
both. The material used to make the jacket
however is on the thin side and I dont
think its going to wear well. Im comparing
it to the MS Fit by Kokatat my wifes which
although a more expensive jacket appears
will outlast this one. That said its still
the nicest fishing vest Ive seen.

Bought this PFD primarily for
canoeing as it sits high and
has less bulk. I recently
used it for fly fishing while
wading local streams in
Washington. It worked well
allowing good freedom of
movement and adequate storage
for some flyfishing gear.
While it would be nice if it
had a water bottle storage, it
is primarily a floatation aid
PFD, not a pack or full life
jacket.

I consider myself a fairly
avid kayak angler. Im out
twice a week as long as
water/air temps safely allow.
I debated for several days
between an auto-inflate jacket
and the NRS. there was no
question, the NRS was my only
choice for a non-inflatable
PFD, and it did not
disappoint. I opted against
an auto-inflate jacket because
they require maintenance. the
LAST thing i want to have to
think about maintaining is my
PFD. also, inflatable PFDs
typically have very little
storage options. however,
they do EXCEL at one thing...
they are extremely low
profile.
so, for the Chinook... pockets
are plentiful, easy to open
one-handed and arent too
obtrusive as long as you dont
stuff them full.
the high-back design is
essential for kayak fishing.
having used a standard MTI
recreation PFD, i was sold on
this feature, alone.
fit is good, plenty of
adjustment. though, it does
tend to ride a bit high on my
chest.
the reason it gets 4 stars is
because it is too thick up
front. i snag the handle end
of the pole when moving around
all the time. its not an
issue when standing to cast or
sight fish, but it sure does
get in the way more often than
id like.

The perfect PFD fishing vest
is yet to be invented, but Im
giving the Chinook 5 stars
because after researching the
market pretty thoroughly I
have come to the conclusion
that its the best one out
there so far. The quality is
good, the function is good,
and it allows for reasonable
freedom of movement. I wish
it had the same features and
storage as a regular fly
fishing vest, but maybe that
will come with the next
generation.

I have been using inflatable pfds prior to buying
this so I don't have a lot of experience with
this type vest, so far I would say for the type of
pfd it is it's seems fairly light and pretty
comfortable, it seems a little bulky compared to
inflatable, also in FL it's little hot but that is
the price you pay for constant floatation. ACK is
great to do business with.

I like the fact I found a
comfy fishing vest that's cut
high enough in the back that I
can sit in my kayak seat
unencumbered. I would feel a
bit more safe with extra
flotation cushioning around
me. I'm a hair under 6ft3in
and weigh in at 285 and while
this PFD would be fine in clam
water i don't think I'll be
using it in swift moving water
or the ocean. Its very comfy
indeed and I'll use it plenty

I'm not the greatest swimmer, and
with waders and wading boots on,
wading across rivers gets me a

overkill but better safe than

I found the vest very functional.
The pockets fit all my gear and
are ample. The rod holder is an
excellent feature. Fit is
adjustable and very very
comfortable. It was a little
bulkier than I thought, but this
is my first PFD so I have no point
of comparison.

Bought an Extrasport Kayak
Vest a few months ago (overall
a good vest if I'm strickly
Kayak Fly Fishing) but pocket
set up not well suited for
westcoast offshore saltwater
fishing.
Bsck floatation foam is
contoured (curved) on the
bottom end to match many Kayak
seats and sits higher and is
10%+ thicker making for better
floatation from the upper back
and head. The only downside is
that there is not pocket
larger enough at chest level
to hold a VHF radio.

The NRS Chinook vest is great for kayak fishing.
1. Plenty of storage pockets that are well thought out and designed
2. High padded back allows you to sit flat against your seat
3. Very comfortable for hours of paddling, plenty freedom of mobility.
4. Very well made product. NRS does good work!
My only concern was the lack of neoprene padded shoudler straps, but after using this vest it has become a moot point.

It has plenty of storage as quoted in the sales pitch. That means I get to carry a tethered PLB in a pocket and still have 3 spare for other fishing gear etc. The NRS Chinook also come with plenty of adjustment straps on the side and top of the shoulders, which translates into it working nicely for my fat gut....I mean kayakers natural insulation and buoyancy! I'm still a believer that a kayak fisher's biggest risk is being run over by boats, so I can't work out why the Chinook isn't offered in a fluro orange/yellow option all over. Many manufacturers equate kayak fishing with green/moss stealth colors, not just NRS and they all need to get on the program. I don't fly fish and ditched the lambswool patch, which is attached with a velcro backing. As with all products, time will be the judge....with initial indications positive. ACK were efficient to deal with, this item needing international shipping. It's a PFD Type 3 if anyone's looking at local regulations.

I've taken this vest out twice now and it is very comfortable (I'm 5'9", 175 lbs, and I bought the L/XL). The pockets are well laid out and it has several attachment points for accessories. I lashed a safety knife using zipties to the bottom of the left pocket using the drain holes. What swayed me to this vest versus the Extrasport Osprey is that the Chinook has a waist belt and the Osprey does not. This supposedly keeps the vest from coming off over your head. Great vest!

great PFD. I shopped vests for a while before choosing the NRS Chinook. I feel like I made a good decision. Good snug fit but very comfortable. Will not hinder your strokes at all and the high back never causes issue with the seatback on my SOT. Very sharp looking vest IMO too. Doesn't have quite the storage and some bells and whistles of some other vest over $100 (rod holder, lanyard, worktable pockets, etc) but I don't think those were worth the $40 or more in price. This one is a little more "no frills" but has all the storage I need for a day paddling. The quality seems very solid too. I believe I will be using this vest for many years!

Very nice PDF and very comfortable. I can switch out small plano boxes of what I am fishing with that day in the larger pockets and not need to carry a tackle box

Great life vest lots of storage, easy to move and swim in and coming from a $20 walmart life vest, the high back is so much more comfortable.

This is a real nice comfortable PFD. Does not feel bulky or get in the way of my fishing or paddling.
ACK is the best. Ordered on a Wednesday and was at my door on Thursday.
I also purchased a Watercraft Mantaray 12 and they were very helpful with my purchase.
Thank you.

I have to say the NRS Chinook Fishing PFD Life Vest is a very comfortable PFD. I am not the thinnest guy around but this PFD fits perfect. It does not bother me at all while kayak fishing because of the high back. Even though it has two bi pockets up front you will not be bothered by them.

Just bought the NRS Chinook Fishing PFD Life Vest during the off season so I haven't been on or in the water with it yet. Looks very well made. I like the adjustability for a good, comfortable fit, and the many useful pockets. I would suggest adding some D rings to the upper chest/shoulder strap area.

This PFD has more pockets than the mustangs we use at work (uscg), in mine i have a strobe that mounts on the velcro that come standard, a dive knife, a distress mirror, a whistle, a small tackle box, and a few snacks, and still have 5 pockets left.
The fit is the best i've ever have had and the SOLAS tape is a big plus.....recommend to ANYONE!!!

I spent months searching for a PFD that was "right". Most don't fit plus sized women very well.. this one is awesome. The adjustable straps allow a custom fit to body style, ventilation is more than adequate and the cut of the back is the most comfortable of any I tried. Cudos to NRS for a product that is unparalleled.

Another well designed product from NRS. More pockets and lash points than you could ever need. Nice big zippers that you can operate even with neoprene gloves. Very comfy and nonrestrictive. It's an excellent choice if you fish from a Hobie Mirage kayak with those high seat backs.
