ACK Review: Powerful and light the Torqeedo ultralight electric trolling motor is great for slapping on the kayak and using to cruise up and down the lake and getting after the fish.

This motor/battery/control system is probably the best way to propel your kayak. We have installed it on a 2015 Hobie Tandem Island boat. Much better that the Hobie "Evolve" system due to the Ultralight 403's ability to tip up when striking an submerged object. The motor has plenty of power to push this 18.5 ft. boat against a 4 mph tidal current in SW Florida. One design issue that it shares with most trolling type motors is the air ventilation of the prop that occurs at about 5 mph due to the cylindrical shaft tube that is being pushed through the water. This occurs with the ultralight 403 also, but is not a problem for most uses of the motor. The life of the supplied Lithium Ion battery is significant. We have run the boat at 3 mph for 4 hrs. and still had over 40% life left. So 5 stars for quality and engineering. We were able to use a modified aircraft streamline tube faring to eliminate the turbulence induced ventilation and now can give the whole system 5 stars.

I installed the Ultralight on my custom built cedar strip 13' kayak. They should call it a "turbo thruster". The combination of paddling and electric gives it such speed you feel like your planing. A very impressive piece of equipment. German engineering lives up to it's reputation. Evidenced in the manner that parts fit during installation. The exact wattage consumption readout allows the user to monitor the power consumption. I found that one of the really nice things about adding electric is my hands are free to pick up a camera and get that shot without losing control or momentum. Expensive yes, but quality lives long after the price tag fades. My only complaint is that the installation guide could be more detailed with a parts description, propeller depth recommendations, etc. I hear a solar panel will be available soon for remote charging capability.
