ACK Review: A recessed compass is great for your kayak. The Ritchie panel mount compass keeps the compass on the kayak at all times and protected from damage. Accurate and useful this is a great item.

Compass easy to mount even tho the compass in slightly bigger than the 2" hole to be drilled, it will still fit with some pressure. Nice looking compass, works well. As some of the other reviewers said, mounting the compass as advertised in their picture shown, not a practical location to mount compass, if mounted there, one can not use the front hatch. I mounted the compass a little below and to the right, fit perfect.

Quality Product. Easy to mount. FYI I used a 2" hole saw specifically for wood and pvc and the compass fit the hole perfectly. Used a 4 post electrical terminal block I bought at a local hardware store for $3.19 to run power to the Lowrance Fish Finder and the compass simultaneously from the battery which is mounted via the Hobie battery bracket mounted to the sail mast mount. Another FYI I might add, do not attempt to mount the compass the front hatch lid as shown in one of the pictures unless you plan to cut the hatch opening lip for clearance, which defects it being a sealed a compartment/

The compass works fine, the problem is with the size hole needed to mount it. You need to make a 2 1/16 hole. No problem you say? Just go to any hardware store and buy the right sized hole saw. NOPE! No retail store within 50 miles of where I live carries that size. The common size is 2 and 2 1/4. Eventually I bought a 2 and a curved file and went to work. The compass has a pretty nifty design on how to handle different thicknesses of mount locations. There a ring that screws onto the back of the compass made of nylon and has a stainless steel insert that can move up and down the cut threads of the ring. Adjust this SS insert so that it tightens against the compass body at the point the ring meets the mounting plate you drilled the hole in. There are contacts for a light inside. They are spade lugs. They come straight off the back. This makes it necessary to have a pretty deep mounting location if you choose to light things up. I would have preferred the spade blades came out the sides so the wires wouldnt need more depth than just the length of the compass.
