Something Unexpected Occurred...
The KC welder pro with hobie color rod stock is a must have for all Hobie kayakers. The ease of fixing holes and adding plastic to damaged areas is key.
Customer Rating: 4.1 of 5
Easily fixed a deep gouge and several old fastener holes. No previous experience with this - but it was not difficult.
I used this KC Welder Pro with Hobie Color Rod Stock kit to repair a major gash in an Old Town kayak. First attempt to weld was not successfull...I was too worried about melting the hull. BUT, once my confidence grew I quickly mastered it. Easy to tell if your weld is good...simply take a flat screw driver to the edge, if it peels up easily the new material and original hull have not bonded together. This really is a GREAT product. Am much more confident that this patch is permanent than the other glue\epoxy\tape type of patches.
If someone is an expert at welding or soldering they might get this product to work. I couldn't. It takes 10 minutes to heat to desirable temperature, and I was completely unable to repair a flex crack in my kayak despite 3 attempts taking 20 minutes each. I bought a flexible adhesive patch for 1/5 the price, applied it in 30 seconds, and it completely solved the problem. I do NOT recommend this product for flex cracks.
After having placed the order, the item arrived within 5 days via. ground transportation, a respectable turn-around time given I live in CT. The KC welder pro performs well with a deft touch. I practiced on scrap polyethylene from a discarded child's play house. I also salvaged additional scraps to use on future repair projects. It is critical to allow the iron (welder) to reach maximum heat before attempting a weld. Only then will the material not stick to the iron. My first real repair was a 1/2" x 2" hole in the bottom of a kayak at the stern. By inserting a strip of scrap poly on the inside of the kayak and holding it in place with a guitar string until the weld began to flow and adhere to the boat and scrap strip, I was able to completely repair the hole. Two people were needed for the initial part of the process. If you can access the inside of the boat or other project you are tackling, definitely weld both sides for added strength. One has the option of using the feed hole in the iron for the poly rods or melting them using the foot and not the hole. I used both with equal success. This is an excellent product that does what it is advertised to do. I do wish the manufacturer would have listed the working temperature of the iron.
