Not 100% convinced that the
rubberized part of the grip is going
to last. Other than that - great!
There's no way this knife is going to
come out of the sheath unless you
want it to.

The knife is well designed and

the kayak. Retreaving the
knife from the seath while

Great knife. The sheath for it

Blade could have been sharper

sharpened and seems to hold a
good edge. The clip on the

Fits perfectly on the lash tab
on my Stohlquist
Rocker, which Im pretty sure
is standard. You
have to take the knife out of
the sheath first to
attach it. I think thats some
of the problem
others are having, trying to
place it with the
knife IN the sheath I tried
that first. Once
the knife is removed you can
press the clip down
and although it is difficult
to secure, it will
not come out on the water. I
own many knives and
it seems to be of good
quality. What youre
paying for here though is the
sheath. It has one
of the best release/securing
systems Ive seen.
Easily removed with one hand.
The knife is very
sharp but has a dull point,
which is what you want
when boating. Top edge is not
sharpened, but it
looks like a double edge blade
and could be made
double edge if you wanted to
put in some work.
Made in China, otherwise five
stars.

A well built knife with a
razor sharp blade. The clip in
mechanism is solid and holds
the knife like securely.
Bottle opener is a plus! The
rubber grip seems solid, and
should last a lifetime if well
cared for. A bit on the bulky
side, but that is the price
for wanting a larger blade.
Sheath hangs tight on my PFD,
and I've never even worried
about it coming loose. If you
want a leaner profile, go with
the Co-Pilot.

Good knife and a good price.
Attached it to the strap on my

digging in a dry bag when I
need a knife in a hurry.
Gives good service and I've
probably used the screwdriver
feature more than the sharp
blade.

I've owned this knife for more than a year now. See my initial review from 3/16/2010. The knife is showing some small rust spots appearing randomly across the knife. They are rather small spots and won't affect the utility of the knife for a long time to come... but they are worth noting. I should also mention that contrary to my initial review, the knife has never accidentally fallen out of its sheath. Overall it's a pretty cool knife for 30 or 40 bucks, but I wouldn't expect it to last forever.

I have been using my boyfriends Pilot knife on my PFD. I have a kokatat msfit tour and the sheath attached securely to the lash tab, I did have to really push it in for it to seat, though. It is oriented vertically with the butt of the knife down which feels ok, except that every once in while, I knock my hand on the pointy end made for breaking glass and it hurts a lot and I'm not really sure that is a very needed feature anyway. I am looking to get the co-pilot for myself because of that and I would like a smaller profile on my pfd but I will miss the cord cutting slot which is a great feature. The only problem is I cannot remove the sheath from the pfd now as it is in so tight.

I have this attached to the chest strap of my pfd and find it is a little heavy and off balanced to wear in a horizontal position but is good to carry upright. It will do the job and detaches from holder very nicely.

I would have given it 5 stars, but like another reviewer stated, it was difficult to attach to the lash tab on my Kokatat Bahia Tour Fishing PFD. Other than that, it has a lot of features and stands up well to corrosion. Even after keeping it wet for a prolonged period of time, it still hasn't shown even a spec of rust. The sheath has a great quick release button allowing for one handed use.

Overall, this is a good knife, but the clip on the sheath is way too large to fit into the standard lash tab on my Kokatat PFD. Either Kokatat makes their lash tabs too small, or NRS made their clip too big. Hmmm... What to do... what to do?

Review:
I'm not sure how I feel about this knife. It certainly looks nice, but it's made in China out of some unspecified material. I'm worried about corrosion in a marine environment.
The sheath that comes with the NRS Pilot is probably more important than the knife itself. It is meant to provide two distinct benefits: 1) an absolutely secure attachment point out in the open, and 2) instant availability of the knife. It's a great idea, but it's not executed with as much precision as is required. The sheath fails to secure the knife with 100% perfection, leaving me with the strong desire to tether the knife, which seems like a bad idea for an emergency knife.
The sheath has two small, plastic, opposite-facing projections that push through a rectangular opening in the knife. These projections are "spring loaded" by way of stressing plastic tabs inside the mechanism. (I opened it up to take a look) These aren't as strong as they should be. I wish this part of the sheath was made of precision metal. Pushing the knife onto the sheath almost always produces tiny black plastic flakes, which means the plastic is wearing away with each reattachment.
I may be unfairly targeting the sheath when the attachment point on the knife may actually be at fault. The rectangular opening on the knife is the weakest part of the whole package. On mine, at least, it is quite rough on the inside with an almost unfinished look. Also, the long sides of the rectangle are tapered. This tapering alone appears to be the cause of the slightly insecure attachment. If you wiggle the knife enough, or accidentally bump one of the disengagement buttons, one of the plastic projections can end up resting on the taper. At this point, if you tug the knife it has a fair chance of popping off the sheath.

Yes, it's expensive. but it is a well designed, solidly constructed knife, not some 5 dollar piece of junk. I searched a long time before I finally decided on the NRS Pilot Knife. I clip it onto my lifevest when fishing from the yak, and clip it onto my shorts or my fanny/backpack when fishing on foot. The molded handle is flat/thin which works great in my smaller hands(big man hands may not like the thin handle). Doesn't slip around when wet. Sheath looked a little crazy at first glance. but it works great too. Knife isn't going to fall out, yet it's simple to release when needed. The sheath material seems tough. I doubt anything will break off of it rendering it useless. The blade holds an okay edge.not great, but okay. Quality construction. Good design. accessible yet secure sheath. Looking forward of years of good service from this knife.

This is a quality knife, looks cool, stays secure in the holder, releases easily and is designed to attach to your vest. I got the black, but if I ever drop my knife in the river I'm gonna wish I had the colored one. The folks at ACK are knowledgeable, professional and friendly.

Like almost all products in the NRS line, this knife has been well designed and rigorously field tested. Truly a great product for the price. I keep mine secured to the lash tap on the front of my PFD. As a fair warning, don't connect the knife to a lash tab unless you plan to keep it there permanently. the shape and design of the clip is so rugged, you almost have to destroy the lash tab to get it off.
