The Advanced Elements BackBone is a bow-to-stern frame for the Advanced Elements Advanced Frame inflatable kayak. It enhances both rigidity and tracking performance. The BackBone is designed to be positioned under the inflatable floor and installed prior to inflation of your kayak. Made of high strength anodized aluminum alloy and impact resistant plastic for durable and light weight performance.
Essential for the Advanced Frame. End of story.
Honestly, there's no noticeable difference with the Backbone on flat lake or slow river water. It may be that the biggest benefit is in ripple or white water, which I haven't tried since buying the Backbone. If you are using your inflatable just on flat water, you can probably save your money.
If you are a big guy and you are close (or a little above...) your AdvancedFrame kayak weight limit, this backbone does the trick to distribute your weight and prevent the kayak to be bent on the center, with the bow and stern raised. I also notice some improvement on tracking and speed, but not much.
Does what it claims to. Easy to install or remove. Do not install if you will be going over rocks, it does increase hull vulnerability to abrasion. I just wish they shipped the boat with a storage bag big enough to hold the backbone.
