My husband is really enjoying this compass mounted on his kayak. Good product.
A good compass, but ONE MAJOR DRAWBACK... the shape of the plexiglass window changes abruptly from horizontal to vertical and badly obscures one's view of the dial because of optical distortion. That is, when mounted to the deck of a kayak, the dial cannot be read from certain angles. It is because of this that I did NOT buy the Orca. As an alternative, ACK should look into providing the Brunton model 58 (or equivalent). The Brunton 58 has a dome-shaped plexiglass window with NO distortion.
I received an Ocean Kayak Ultra Trident 4.7 for Christmas. I also own two other kayaks and use them primarily for open ocean fishing in and around Point Arena, CA. My kayaks are equipted with very good fathom meters that have GPS with charts. I have occasionally had problems with my electronics and often operate in heavy fog. I would never consider leaving land without a good compass and have found one with the Suunto Orca. You can have the best electronic devices but you can not wager your life on them alone.
Great for day paddling. But impossible to read during a night paddle, even when it is close to the paddler's eyes.
