The Hobie 8 in. Twist and Seal Hatch is the standard hatch on Hobie kayaks. Older models can easily upgrade to the twist and seal. The twist and seal is a unique mechanism that allows for one hand operation and it ensures that the hatch is sealed. The hinged lid keeps the hatch lid with the kayak at all times and the rubber gasket keeps the hatch dry.
I bought the 8" flat Hobie Hatch and mounted it to my curved Perception. I knew they would not match, so I snugged the hatch down about half way and started heating the kayak with a heat gun. Slowly for about 30 minutes, I circled the heat gun around the hatch. When the kayak was soft enough, I placed a weight on the hatch to form both surfaces together. What a beautiful job, as the kayak formed perfectly to the hatch. I could not ask for better results!! If you do this, the secret is patients and slowly heat the kayak....
If you are thinking of purchasing this hatch for a Hobie Kona, go for the 6" hatch. You can get it with a dry bag that is not available with the 8" hatch. This hatch works well but, barely fits on the kona.
took longer to unwrap than it did to install. A perfect fit!
This kit arrived ahead of time and fit perfectly. The description is misleading...not complete...there were only 2 screws in the kit and it requires 8. The seal is a cheap foam that tears very easily. Included in kit: 1 hatch, 2 screws, 1 foam seal, 1 rubber O-ring and the backing ring that you screw into and goes inside the hull-mine had 1of the 8 posts broken off so I used the old one, reused my screws and reused the original rubber seal. This is so expensive I am going to try finding just the hatch O-ring for my other hatch....
