Solid, well built, watertight. Rod holders are very sturdy. I strap it down and use it as my seat on my paddleboard. Very comfortable and perfect size for me.
DRY BOX IS AS STATED......A DRY BOX. It is not a good cooler, does not keep ice well at all. The latches are cheap but...... it fits well in a kayak and the attached rod holders are nice. Be sure to leash your rods, as the holders are so close together, it is hard to get one out without bumping into another. I think if I had to do over again, I would spend the money for a higher quality product.
Product: Engel 30 qt Dry box/Cooler with 4 rod holders. The actual internal dimensions vary slightly from that stated. I measure 16" w x 9.75" D x 11"h, which is a little smaller than stated. Not a problem for me but if you are expecting to fit something in this cooler the exact dimensions would help. At first I thought the cooler was too large for my needs. But after using it, I found it is a perfect size for fishing. I can put in it one 10 lb bag of ice (standard size ice bag) with a few pounds of bait and a couple beverages. The cooler does handle all this well, fills it up to the top. I used the cooler recently for Florida Keys bridge fishing. I found that the cooler was always fully loaded by the time i put everything in there for fishing. The ice lasted the entire day, maybe about 1/3 of the bag of ice remained the next morning, after removing everything from it, except the ice at the end of the day. Given the temperature was around 82 degrees and there was little shade and we kept opening and closing the cooler to get bait out, I think it did a great job insulating. I did order one extra top tray, so I have two. These work great to put frozen bait fish in when fishing, easy to grab bait and it covers part of the cooler so you don't let in so much hot air every time you open it. And it also keeps the messy bait in one small container. They are easy to wash out later too. On a day trip, I loaded a 10 lb bag of ice into a warm cooler with a warm 12 pack of bottled water and a few other beverages, some warm some cool (not really cold). On a 24 hour trip the ice was melted around 8 hours later. But oddly, 24 hours later, with the ice all melted, the cooler temperature was 56 degrees. I think the cooler does a great job holding the temperature but if you start with warm beverages you will need a second bag of ice to keep the temperature. This would be normal for any coolers. The carry strap is requred to lift a fully loaded/heavy cooler. Would not trust the small handle. The strap is kind of small and puts a lot of pressure on your shoulder when carrying it. I will modify mine with some type of shoulder pad. But I did get by with it initially. The rod holders are great but putting in a long handle rod, like a saltwater rod will extend through the bottom to the ground. Not a major issue but need to be a little careful when lifting it or setting it down so you don't damage your rod handles. One positive note, the rod handles are screwed into the side of the cooler to the rod holder mount. But the rod hold mount does not screw into the cooler, I think they glued it on. This is good because you do not have a steel screw extending from outside the cooler into the inside of the cooler. This is the right way to fasten a rod holder to a cooler to minimize loosing heat inside the cooler. The top hinges are plastic with a steel rod. Not exactly what I would call great but much better looking then the cheap coolers at the local store with the plastic flex hinge. I did accidentally swing open the lid and it slipped out of my hand but did not crack off the hinge. I was surprised it didn't break, I think the hinge quality is ok. Overall the cooler is great, I really like it for fishing. I do think the 30 qt is needed for fishing, it just fits a standard size bag of ice, bait, and a few beverages. I found as you catch fish and the ice melts a little, there will be more room for the fish. No problem fitting snapper into the cooler. I do not think the smaller 19 qt would work for saltwater fishing, much too small. This is very hard to see in the on-line pictures and I did think the 30 qt was too large when I first received it but no way, the 30 qt is the perfect size for fisihing Florida bridge fishing. Be sure to get the extra tray, it has turned out to be a great thing to have. Hope this helps someone thinking about the cooler.
Good quality cooler and the addition of 4 rod holders only makes it an even better value.
