The Hobie Large Rudder Blade for the Pro Angler is a large rudder blade designed by Hobie specifically for Pro Angler kayaks. Consider upgrading your Pro Angler rudder if you want better control in choppy or windy conditions of if you tend to overload the bow of your kayak. The Large Pro Angler Rudder Blade is longer than the traditional rudder blade so it will require some special handling when loading and transporting your boat. If you've experienced poor steering performance on your Pro Angler, the large rudder blade will give you that extra control you need.
the xl rudder is on my 2014 pa-14. it was not a simple install, no instructions, had to use a phillips head driver on a ratchet wrench, to get enough torque. went on easily after the original was removed. have used it several times, and will give it 4 stars, it does improve short radius turnout, and provides additional directional stability. the place where i experienced the most improvement was when drifting along a shoreline, i can stay 40-50 feet offshore and fly fish the shoreline cover. by adjusting the rudder angle, and occasional use of the mirage drive, i can drift along parallel to shore for as long as i want.
Rudder is slightly larger and field testing has yet been determined. So why the review? Because I made an attempt to install it, but encountered an issue. I use my Pro Angler in fresh and salt water. Although the boat gets rinsed after every use, the mechanism that holds the rudder on and mounts it to the boat, could not be removed. The connecting screws appear to have been impacted by corrosion. Theconnecting screws consist of one phillips and one standard screwdriver head, versus a screw and nut. Thus, it's virtually impossible to remove without stripping. The inability to remove this piece requires the purchase of the entire mounting assembly. Without knowing this, you, you may have to purchase the entire rudder housing, which will cost around $50.00. If you are considering the upgrade, drop the rudder and check whether you can loosen the screws first. If you can, you'll be in good shape. If not, be ready to cough up an extra $50.00, and wait at least 2-3 weeks to get the parts, since they typically aren't carried by dealers. After that, "hope" that it makes the difference!
this is something that all should have and it should be standard equipment.
Supper easy to install and what a difference it make on the river should come standard on the pro angler 12
