The Harmony BTS Rudder Blade and Blade Housing is the replacement blade for all of the BTS rudder systems including both Wilderness Systems, Perception and Dagger Kayaks.
I purchased this rudder to replace my OEM Wilderness Systems rudder, as the internal block that holds the steering shaft was split in half and the sheave that the up-hall line rotates around was failing due to UV damage. You can purchase the block, but not the sheave... I decided to buy the Harmonay rudder to replace my rudder. I have many boats (power and sail) and several kayaks, some are high performance (like surf skis) and some are slow pokes. This kayak is a Cape Lookout and is my go-to for 5 to 10 mile paddles, when I just want to push off, but don't want to mess with my other boats, so after owning this kayak for 17 years, this kayak has been used over 100 times per year on average and this aside from replacing the lifting handles is the only other part that I have had to replace. Now about the new rudder... The new rudder is painted with electroplate method, the old rudder anodized (black). The new rudder is already missing some paint, due to normal shipping and handling. The old rudder blade is foil shaped and the new rudder is just a flat piece of metal. This new rudder caused a slight vibration, felt through the hull and peddles at about 1.8 knots, the old rudder never vibrated. The old rudder's up-hall sheave was made of non UV (white) plastic. The new rudder's sheave is made of UV resistant (black) plastic. The new rudder has a universal shaft that is almost twice as long as needed. The old rudder's shaft fit exact. I will cut the extra length off of the new rudder, even though it has no impact on the rudder's function, is is un-seamanship to have parts on any boat that do not fit properly and or look unsightly. I may repair the old rudder and replace the new one if the vibration continues to drive me nuts.
I purchased this rudder as a replacement for the broken Yakima rudder on my 17 foot Perception Eclipse plastic kayak. It is close to an exact fit but I did need a 3/8" ID by 7/16" long spacer to take up the slack on the shaft to the cotter pin. I also used some spacers on the bolts for the steering lines but shorter bolts would have worked as well. I am very happy with this product so far and shipping was fast. I can't speak for durability because I just installed it but it looks very well made compared to the all plastic Yakima rudder.
