From The Editor
The holidays are approaching and in Texas it is about to get COLD, it may even hit 40 degrees for a few days. Ironically our Customers tend to stay off the water in the winter even though temperatures are balmy compared to just about any other part of the country. However, we know a lot of you use kayaking for exercise and therefore we wrote a piece on Getting Loose and Staying Warm. (For those in the upper mid-west, ignore this, it will not help!)
 
Also with the holiday time approaching we have been busy little elves scouring through our vast array products to find the best holiday selections. In the coming weeks we will be launching our Holiday Buyer's Guide. The guide will be a subset of our products that we feel are the good choices for the holiday season. Additionally, we have added an "Employee Pick" section that includes some of our favorite products. Look for this around Thanksgiving.
 
Lastly we would like to thank all of you for your support with the Milleman Fund Memorial Auction. With your help we were able to raise $3,700 from the auction itself.
Get Loose and Stay Warm
As colder weather begins to set in, don't let that stop you from getting out on the water and enjoying some private time with nature. Make sure though that you are good and prepared for your excursion.
 
Before you hit the water, make sure you loosen those tight muscles. Nothing worse than hitting the water tight and restricted. Here are some tips for loosening up before you start:
 
  • Take a short jog or brisk walk from your car or boat.
  • Use continuous pressure while stretching. No herky-jerky motions.
  • Hold your stretches for 15 - 20 sec for the small muscles in your hands and arms.
  • Hold your stretches for 30 - 40 sec for the larger muscles in your legs and torso.
  • Remember to breathe and relax while stretching.

    Another important factor of cold weather paddling is dressing the part. Wear loose, quick-drying kayak apparel and remember to layer. HydroSilk shirts make for great base layers and paddle jackets are good for staying dry. Synthetic materials dry quickly and will keep you warmer and more comfortable than wool or cotton. Dry bags are a great way to bring an extra set of clothes in the event that you do dump over.
     
    Suggested items for cool weather paddling: HydroSilk shirts, paddle jackets, gloves, dry bags, loose fitting synthetic tops and bottoms.
     
    Malibu Kayaks Mini-X Review
    They just don't make kayaks like this. A 9' boat that weighs a paltry 35 pounds and has a maximum capacity of 325 pounds...that's right 325 pounds. It just isn't done. But Malibu Kayaks has done it! The Mini-X is small enough to get around town by yourself and stable enough for children or grown adults. Talk about storage capacity. The Mini-X has three optional storage hatch areas including room for a large square hatch in front of your dry seating area. A large tank well and plenty of area for rod holders will make this little boat a big success for you.
