The day began like any of my other San Marcos River Day trips; launched just before sunrise with beautiful sunny skies and warm 85 degree weather (took place in July). I had been fly fishing for a few months prior bringing nothing but the fly; by this time I had fully converted to fly fishing and the poor bait casters were getting dusty in the garage. I normally target bass and the occasional sunfish on the fly and this day was no different.
About half way into the float I must have made a dozen fly changes and hadn’t gotten a single bite from a bass. I then decided to tie on
my tried and true Sunfish fly and do what we call in Texas, a little Perch jerking. Shortly after, I started catching all different species of sunfish such as long ear sunfish and red breast sunfish. Continue reading My State Record Sunfish

So now that you know about the massive selection of kayaks, canoes & paddleboards available to demo and the free paddling and outdoor clinics provided by our vendor representatives and local experts you may be wondering exactly what the ACK Demo Days looks like. Well, luckily for you we made a video of our Spring 2014 Austin Demo Days so you can check it out before September! Enjoy and be sure to check back for updates up until the event.
Our 2014 Spring Kayak Demo Days took place earlier this month and as usual we all had a blast putting them on. This bi-annual event is a company wide favorite to host each year because of the opportunity it gives us to interact with customers and manufacturer representatives plus do a little paddling of our own.
For those not familiar with our Kayak Demo Days, we have been putting them on since 2006 and every year they seem to get a little bigger. Manufacturer representatives from all over the country come together along with their line-up of kayaks, paddle-boards, camping gear, and other accessories. Then, we tack on gear and kayaks of our own and paddlers from all over Central Texas have the opportunity to try it all out free of charge. Not only that, but our expert staff put on a series of educational outdoor clinics on a wide variety topics which have become very popular.
This year, we hosted a total of four events across Central Texas over two weekends and had a huge range of new models to try out as well as our biggest line-up of educational clinics to date. Despite some rain both weekends, we had a great time meeting paddlers from all across the state and helping them to find the best model for their needs.
Especially given the weather, we wanted to give a big thank you to everyone who joined us. It wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun without you…we’ll see you for the next round come fall
Our stores are full of savings for paddlers with plenty of ways score a good deal on a kayak, canoe or SUP and the best place to start is the Used Kayaks section on our website which shows you everything you can find at our various store locations. Do those price tags excite you? I thought they might…but that’s not all, oh no! On top of big savings off of the regular price, our stores offer a $50 store credit* towards accessories with the purchase of a used, blemished or clearance kayak.
But wait, there’s more! If you’re on the fence about a specific model, we always have our rental reimbursement program to help you make your decision. Our rental fleet is full of models that you can try out with 24 hour rentals and the freedom to take the kayak anywhere you want at reasonable prices. If you’re thinking about one that’s not in the fleet, we’ll do our best to accommodate you needs. And if you decide to buy a used or new kayak, we’ll reimburse your first 24 hour rental fee!
Online Savings for Paddlers not in Texas
Sorry out of state customers, due to the nature of used kayaks we do not sell them online, but we do sell a large number of clearance, discontinued or blemished models in the ACK Outlet! Save up to 30% on an ACK Outlet kayak and score our ongoing deals like FREE kayak shipping to your door* and 15% off* accessories with purchase. Not bad, right?
So what are you waiting for? These kayaks won’t be here forever, jump on this opportunity before it’s too late!
Here’s the fine print:
*Free shipping offer excludes Hobie kayaks and accessories. $50 Store Credit offer only applies to in-store purchases. $50 Store Credit offer and 15% Off All Items offer excludes Hobie kayaks and accessories, Thule and Yakima products as well as all kayaks, canoes, standup paddleboards and other boats, trailers, electronics, gift certificates, lessons, trips, events, any closeout or specially priced products. Been having a blast at all of the Texas Boat Shows and just wanted to give you a peep at our booth for each one. Our stores work overtime to man both the shows and their respective locations, and always have a blast in the end seeing old faces and meeting new ones. We’ve had a great turnout this year and appreciate everyone who’s visited us so far. Hope to see you in San Antonio where you can find all of our Hobie boats along with several other brands.
This year the city of San Marcos, Texas was proud to host the 2012 Kayak Polo National Championships at Rio Vista Park. The Austin Aquabats put the event on and they dominated the competition as well. They placed 1st in division A and B, beating out teams from all over the United States including the San Francisco Pelicans and the New York Hammerheads. I attended the event and thought it was very cool to see the park I have been going to for years transformed with floating docks and goal posts with nets into an arena of sorts. The games were fast paced, intense, and very entertaining as a spectator. All of the people were very friendly and the atmosphere was great. It will be very interesting to see where this sport goes in the coming years as more people become aware of the sport! Enjoy the pictures!
Kristian Kolflat, Assistant Austin Store Manager, and Andrew Moczygemba, Store Manager in the Houston Store, report on the recent Paddles and Paddling guest seminar.
Danny Mongno of Werner paddles visited our Houston and Austin stores last week and shared his 22 years of paddling expertise in a special seminar titled “Paddles and Paddling”. He discussed paddling technique, fit and even had a chance to work one on one with individuals to improve their stroke.
Andrew cites the event as being highly anticipated and well received. For those that haven’t heard, our Houston location recently suffered fire damage and was forced to close for a short period. Despite this, Danny was still able to visit and had about 15 people in attendance. “People kept calling during the week to make sure that the fire would not stop us from having the seminar,” said Andrew, “And luckily we were still able to – it was a great event.”
There were a number of helpful tips that attendees were able take away from the event. Kristian lists a few:
Use bent shaft paddles when you have existing pain in your wrists or paddle long distances and want something more ergonomically fitting, or are prone to joint pain.
The more light-weight the better. Best way to get a feel for how light it is to hold it out in front of you, horizontal to the ground, with one hand in the middle and your arm about shoulder height. Swirl the paddle with your wrist and hold it there for a few minutes. This will give you an idea of how heavy it will be to use all day long.
Most individuals should be using low angle paddles. Big bladed and high angle paddles should be used when paddling in heavy wind, current or when aggressive paddling is in the forecast.
Make sure to use the proper size paddle for your body height and boat width. Also, make sure you use the proper paddling techniques.
Of course, Danny spoke in much more depth and offered individual help to event goers. Thanks to everyone in attendance and we look forward to putting on more seminars like this in the months to come!
