It’s coming close to a year now since ACK launched its in-store seminar series. For those that live near one of our stores, hopefully you’ve had a chance to attend one by now. For those of you who are not familiar with our in-store seminars, ACK’s expert store staff has been putting on local, educational tutorials each week on topics based on customer feedback. These seminars are casual, free events conveniently scheduled on Saturday mornings.
Some examples of topics we’ve discussed in the past include Basics of Kayaking, Choosing a Paddle, Loading and Hauling a Kayak, and Outfitting a Kayak for Fishing. While some of these topics are more popular than others, our expert staff puts the same amount of effort into the event whether one person shows up or twenty. These have been particularly good opportunities for Q&A sessions.
So come down and check one out! Our next seminar is scheduled for this Saturday, March 3rd, 2012 and is titled “Places to Paddle”. Our expert staff will discuss lakes, rivers, and creeks in the Austin, San Marcos, and Houston areas that are good for recreational paddling, fishing, and everything else. You can always find an updated list of upcoming seminars for Houston, Austin and San Marcos. And don’t forget, we also offer attendees an in-store discount for attending the event. – Joseph @ACK
Back in January of 2011, we started hosting a seminar series that not only focused on paddling activities such as fishing and camping but also offered basic lessons and tips on where to go. The seminars were conducted at all three stores, typically on Sunday mornings, by both ACK staff members and invited guest speakers.
We’ve had a lot of great feedback regarding these events but we’ve also learned a few things. For instance, many would be attendees requested a different day other than Sunday morning and others were hoping for a different time. This quarter, we decided to continue the series on Saturday mornings from 11am-12pm. This new schedule seems to make sense since most people are out and about shopping and running errands on Saturdays anyway. We will also host a variety of additional special events on other days and evenings.
We also obtained some feedback on seminar topics. This quarter, we introduced a few new ones including an intro to Stand Up Paddleboarding seminar in Houston, specific fish species fishing techniques in Austin, Whitewater paddling basics in San Marcos and how to rig and repair a kayak at all three stores.

Here at ACK we strive to participate in as many events as possible to not only promote our brand, services and products that we sell but also to support a variety of organizations that do their part to protect our natural resources, environments and wildlife. While most of our attention was focused on demo days during the March and April months, we now turn out attention to a few other events we’ve recently participated in.
Bayou Bash – Houston, Texas
Back in April, ACK Houston had the privilege of sponsoring and attending the Bayou Bash in downtown Houston. This is a fundraising event put on by the Bayou Buddies who are associated with the Buffalo Bayou Partnership. The focus was to get people from the area to come down and enjoy food and drinks as well as making them aware of the unique waterway that runs through the center of Houston. We had a small booth set up down by a public boat launch with a small fleet of boats to let people jump in and experience the scenery that the Buffalo Bayou provides. The event was a success for everyone with good music, food and drinks (St. Arnolds Brewery was in attendance) for a good cause. If you are ever in Houston and would like to take a nice paddle around town, don’t overlook what the Buffalo Bayou can provide you! – Jerron, ACK Houston
Earthday Celebration – San Marcos, Texas
ACK San Marcos attended the Earthday Celebration at the Texas State Aquarena Center back in April. We were set up right at the headwaters of the beautiful San Marcos River along Spring Lake. It was a great setting for this event and we sure felt lucky to spend the day in this beautiful environment. This area is known for being a critical habitat to 8 listed endangered and threatened species.
The Aquarena Earth Day Celebration spotlighted a theme of “sustainability”. Texas State students have many opportunities through course work, research, and community involvement to learn about and address sustainability challenges whether they be environmental, economic, or social issues. The concept of sustainability is human interaction with the planet and the impacts this interaction has on the environment. Earthday highlighted the importance of awareness and responsibility to preserve and protect our environment. ACK is proud to have been associated with such a great event and we look forward to visiting the Aquarena Center again soon! – Doug, ACK San Marcos
Austin CCA Banquet – Austin, Texas
ACK Austin enjoyed a spectacular evening with over 1,200 CCA Austin Chapter members for a fundraising banquet benefiting Texas’ fragile marine resources. Congrats to the CCA Austin Texas Chapter for putting together an amazing event. The night was filled with good conversation, food and live music but most importantly a very dynamic auction raising over 150K for coastal conservation. ACK had a display of several kayaks and donated two Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120’s. One of them, together with a fishing trip, raised over $3000! ACK is a proud CCA supporter and sponsor and we look forward to next year’s banquet. – Roland, ACK HQ
Lake Travis Spring Fest – Austin, Texas
Just a quick shout out thanking all of you that visited our booth featuring Hobie kayaks at the 2011 Spring Fest Boat Show in Bee Caves, Texas. It was a great family friendly event and we enjoyed visiting with everyone. – Roland, ACK HQ
Boy Scout Troop 454 Seminar – Austin, Texas
The ACK Austin store recently hosted a seminar and meeting for Boy Scout Troop 454. We had a great time educating the young crowd on the basics of kayaking and water safety which helped them fulfill requirements towards their canoe and kayak merit badges. Good job Troop 454! – Justin, ACK San Marcos
