What do you see when you find a small, locally owned kayak shop in Austin, Texas? Steve and Peter Messana, owners of Austin Canoe & Kayak (ACK), saw potential. They took a tiny specialty paddling shop and developed it into the booming business it is today. Starting with the flagship store in Austin, TX and then growing across Central Texas, ACK has developed into one of Texas’s largest kayak fishing and outdoor retailer while maintaining its mom-and-pop shop feel in each of its brick and mortar locations.
I recently sat down with ACK President & Co-Owner Steve Messanna to talk about the development of Austin Canoe and Kayak, his passion for the outdoors, and the path less traveled that brought him to collaborating with his brother on their biggest project yet as they prepare to celebrate ten years at ACK.
Here at ACK we are getting ready to mark our 10th anniversary and we figured – why not extend the celebration to our biggest fans and supporters?! So, starting this Thursday, after signing up to be a part of our Ten Year Anniversary, we will be sending out one email a day containing ACK fun facts, staff videos, interviews, and best of all a hand selected discounted item of the day!
The minute I set my eyes on a Kammok Roo I knew I had to own one. Not only is it attractive, local to Austin, and tear resistant but with the purchase of every Roo, Dragonfly, or Glider, Kammok is able to provide life-saving treatment to 5 children diagnosed with malaria in Africa.

Camping, hiking, kayaking, swimming, climbing, or fishing – treat yourself. Cheese, onion, sausage, fennel, and pine nuts kind of treat yourself. Alright enough with the lists, it’s about time we have a serious conversation about a very serious breed of pizza. We’re stepping it up this week with a bit of camp gourmet.
Since you rented that SUP (standup paddleboard) last summer, you can’t seem to get it off your mind, we get it – It’s fun, you get a great workout, and all the while your getting perfectly sun-kissed. There are a few different kinds of boards to choose from and choosing correctly can be difficult. So, in efforts to avoid making some mistakes, we’ve detailed the different kinds of choices you can opt for with descriptions and examples to boot.
Having been on numerous camping trips as kids and several trips together as adults, Jeff and I figured we were prepared for most of the issues that could come up while camping, at least in a somewhat developed, maintained campsite that is relatively close to civilization. However, we met our match at a trip to Lazy L&L Campground in New Braunfels, Texas last November.
