The Kayak Adventure You’ve Been Missing Out On

ACK Fan and Customer, Bill Halwick on his 43rd Consecutive Full Moon Paddle.

Full Moon paddle sessions are lesser known excursions for those interested in taking their kayak experience to the next level. Historically, doing much of anything under the glow of a full moon has had mystic connotations associated to it. As a whole, kayakers and SUP boarders get a kick out of the adventure for their own personal purposes, and not to intentionally awaken any undead lake monster on a night that would appear to be ideal for those kind of bewitching endeavors. For convenience purposes, these events typically occur on warmer nights when the water can be guaranteed a certain temperature above freezing. But in a lot of cases people go solo on these trips in efforts to experience a sense of solitude and connectedness with their natural setting, sometimes even in the heart of winter. Houston Fishing Show

unnamed (2)2015 marked the 40th anniversary of the annual Houston Fishing Show and this year I was lucky enough to get an insiders glimpse at the larger than life event. Every year, the emphasis is on tackle fishing, with all facets of the world of fishing fully explored through ongoing clinics, displays, movies, and, in efforts to encourage an early start to outdoor appreciation, there were plenty of different activities for interested children.  All of the seminars were on relevant industry topics including, “Pre-Spawn Bass” and “Fly Fishing on the Texas Coast” all led by experts in the field. All of the newest and most popular fishing equipment from all around the world is on display so that you can try out the tools you are most interested in but haven’t yet gotten a chance to get your hands on. All of the exhibits had knowledgeable informational resources so that you could fully understand the products before purchasing or adding to your wish-list.

unnamed (3)Along with experts and outdoor industry retailers, plenty of partners from local Recreational State Parks joined us for the event to keep hikers and boaters informed and up to date on events and happenings within the fisherman’s natural setting. For example: the ACK booth was set up right across the way from the kind folks at Lake Sommerville State Park and Trailway.

Austin, Texas (February 25, 2015) – Outdoor retailer,, a division of MSP Holdings, LLC, today unveiled their new home-page and header/footer design for after weeks of collaboration between the design, merchandising and development teams.

The design ushers the website into 2015 with a modernized look and feel while maintaining the ease of navigation and user-friendly experience that customers have come to expect from ACK.  New features include an updated carousel of hero image graphics, expanded website width and a search bar that follows the user as they scroll so that they are never more than a mouse click away from finding the exact product they’re looking for.  Even with all the changes, the responsive functionality and consistency across all devices (including tablet and mobile) that the previous design demonstrated are still found with the updated look.

“We knew that it was time to redesign the home page and give it an updated look, but our primary objective was an improved customer experience.  It’s now much easier to use the site and all of its search and navigation tools,” said Austin Olson, Marketing Manager at ACK. Tips and Tricks for Hiking the Guadalupe Mountain Trail

IMG_0867At 8,751 ft. you stand at the highest peak of the Guadalupe Mountain Range and subsequently, the highest point in all of Texas, sandwiched far between Carlsbad and El Paso. It’s an adventure big enough for a true Texan or in my case a Texan transplant. Your car’s headlights are the only trace of light when entering into the park past dusk, and with no houses illuminating the mountainside, the park is reminiscent of most of West Texas- beauteous but bleak. It’s obvious to me that the desolation itself is the main attraction, drawing thousands of tourists to the baron landscape every year.

If you are on a mission for seclusion it is only natural that you will eventually find yourself point blank in West Texas surrounded by spontaneous dust tornados and animals more confused by humans than they would be by monsters. Climbing at Reimers Ranch Park

This past Sunday, I wanted to get outside and accomplish some much needed climbing. After warming up a bit at the North Austin Rock Gym I headed west to Reimer’s Ranch for some bouldering, hiking, and people watching. In my option, Reimer’s Ranch has proven to be the best outdoor climbing spot closest to Austin, TX (besides the Greenbelt) where you can perform a series of different styles from bouldering to sport climbing including some epic and notorious climbs including the famous “Arbor Wall”. Most of the rocks are already bolted up so if you fancy top-rope climbing, there are plenty of fun under-hangs all ready for you to test out!

reimersranchReimer’s Ranch is easily the most populated hiking spot near Austin. There are so many different activities from fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking, swimming, and the obvious climbing. Continue reading Climbing at Reimers Ranch Park
