How To: Install a Center Hatch

Many people are scared to do any drilling or sawing on their kayaks out of fear they will damage it, this is a short tutorial for installing a center hatch, in this case, in a Prowler Big Game.

1. Locate the correct hatch for your kayak.
2. Lay the foam gasket in the hatch area or if the hatch doesn’t come with a gasket lay the hatch frame in the depression. Using a sharpie, outline the gasket or frame.
3. Drill a hole in the hatch area inside the sharpie line.
4. Using a jigsaw cut along or just outside the sharpie line.
5. Use a file to smooth the area you have just cut or to remove excess plastic blocking the insertion of the hatch.
6. Set the hatch frame onto the gasket and push down until firmly in place, and hold.
7. Using a 5/32” drill bit, drill holes in all of the pre-determined hole areas.
8. Insert bolts and nuts and tighten in a uniform fashion.
9. Your hatch should be water tight and ready for fun.
10. Have Fun!
