This week it was announced that the TPWD Expo was canceled for this year and next because they had lost significant financial backing from sponsors. I'm really saddened by this news because I thought the TPWD was one of the best free events I have ever been to in my life. The looks on the kids faces that got to experience biking, kayaking, shooting archery and general wildlife was priceless.
2 years ago I first attended the expo with ACK and was in awe of all the people that came together for an event that taught kids and adults how to have fun outside. I was floored when I learned that the event was free!!! What events are free anymore? In this world where gym classes are being canceled because of a lack of funding. Video/computer games and TV are far more important than taking a step outside for children. The TPWD expo was a necessary joy for the people; in Austin and the surrounding neighborhoods.
I don't know the answer or how to fix this disaster but I wish it could be averted that someone would come to the rescue. The expo is worthwhile event that needs to find the will to go on in some capacity.
